Prosecco: the World Leader in Sparkling Wines

Prosecco is a dry sparkling wine produced in Italy from the white Glera grape. The cultivation areas of the Glera variety, located in 9 provinces of Veneto and Friuli Venezia, in 1969 were officially registered and named the only Prosecco wine production area in Italy.

The heart of Prosecco production are the elite cultivation areas of Glera – a conditional region between the municipalities of Valdobbiadene to the west and Conegliano to the east, located in the north-east of Italy, 50 km from Venice and about 100 km from the Dolomites.

The cultivation of the Glera grape is practiced only in the sunniest part of the hills at an altitude between 100 and 500 meters above sea level. This particular position between the mountain and the sea provides this area with a moderate microclimate: the average annual temperature is about 12.3 C. Furthermore, the area is constantly moved by winds, which allow the grapes to dry quickly after the rains: this area is characterized by frequent but short rains. The unique natural complex makes this area particularly suited to viticulture.

All these factors contribute to the creation of Prosecco Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, a wine with a characteristic aroma. In 2009 the Ministry of Agriculture of Italy classified it as a product of the highest level of Italian quality in the category of Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin – DOCG.

Speaking of Prosecco in the Superior category, it is essential to mention the “King of Prosecco” – Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG Superiore di Cartizze.

Cartizze is a small area of vineyards (106 hectares), between the hills of San Pietro di Barbozza, Santo Stefano and Saccol, in the municipality of Vadbobiadene, where the best Prosecco is born, with aristocratic characteristics. This is thanks to the ideal combination of a mild microclimate and an ancient land, cultivated with great diligence by the winemakers.

The combination of the climatic factors of this area, which allows the vines to develop in a balanced way, is considered the most ideal for the Glera grape. In Cartizza the grapes are harvested only by hand and relatively late, when the bunch shows the first signs of natural drying, thus obtaining a more intense bouquet of aromas and a rich colour during the vinification phase. Despite the small size of the territory, an average of one million bottles of unique and luxurious Prosecco are produced here yearly.
